FAQ
Note: This is a pre-sales FAQ only. Please refer to the software documentation and/or knowledge base for frequently asked questions regarding the operation of the KillerSecurity software
Q. What is the difference between an account and a login?
KillerSecurity tracks account information as well as login information. Each account can have multiple logins. This means that each time a user logs in, a new login is counted. For example, if a user logs in from work during the day, and home at night, that account will have 2 logins.
Q. Do I have to share my password file with you? How is my privacy protected?
No, you do not have to share your password file. In fact, we advise against sharing your password file with any 3rd party vendors to prevent password leaks. Your privacy is important to us. We keep all of your information confidential and we will not give out any of your contact information to any third parties without your express permission. The KillerSecurity service maintains anonymous usage statistics that are in no way connected to any user or account data. The standalone version does not report any statistical information back to KillerSecurity.com.
Q. How does licensing work for the KillerSecurity service?
As you have seen on the pricing page, the service options are only different in how many user accounts the service will handle. There are two key points to keep in mind. If you have more accounts than your account supports, you are not automatically converted to the next service option. The system will simply disregard additional account activity. Lastly, the system only tracks active users. If a user does not login for over a week, the account will not count towards your limit. This means that if you have 1000 users, but only half are active, you will not need to upgrade from the basic plan (500 account limit).
Q. What are the system requirements for the KillerSecurity service?
The requirements for the service depend heavily on the client software you wish to use. Our apache logging daemon is designed to run on UNIX systems running perl 5.x. Alternative daemons are available, but may not be officially supported by KillerSecurity.
Q. What are the system requirements for the KillerSecurity standalone version?
We no longer offer a standalone version of our software. Through the service, we provide better than real time tracking and blocking. This means that we block attacks before they start.
Q. If I buy the standalone version, how long do I get free updates? How do updates work?
We no longer offer a standalone version of our software. See above.
Q. Do I have to have my own server to use KillerSecurity?
No, you don't have to own a server to use our software, although it is recommended that you don't use shared hosting in order to minimize your security risks for your password files and content. Depending on the logging daemon you use, it may be required to modify your <VirtualHost> directive to include a CustomLog entry for the logging daemon. Contact your friendly system administrator to see if that is allowed.
Q. How many sites can I protect with one copy of the software?
The software will protect as many sites as you wish to throw at it. The service version of the software also will protect an unlimited number of sites, but you may be limited by your service plan as to the number of user accounts the service will track for you.
Q. I would like to know about [insert topic here]. I don't see it on the web site or FAQ. How can I get answers to my questions?
